Le contour des yeux s'applique en petite quantité sur la peau autour de l'œil, le plus souvent en tapotant doucement le long de l'os orbital, le matin, le soir ou aux deux moments. Gels et roll-on sont en général plus légers et plutôt réservés au matin, les crèmes plus riches au soir. Les fabricants conseillent généralement d'éviter le contact direct avec les yeux.
Les formules ressemblent à celles des crèmes visage, mais sont souvent moins parfumées, voire sans parfum. On y retrouve fréquemment GLYCERIN, SODIUM HYALURONATE, SQUALANE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII BUTTER, NIACINAMIDE et CAFFEINE. Des peptides comme PALMITOYL TRIPEPTIDE-1, ACETYL HEXAPEPTIDE-8 ou PALMITOYL TETRAPEPTIDE-7 apparaissent régulièrement, tout comme des dérivés de vitamines tels que TOCOPHEROL ou ASCORBYL GLUCOSIDE.
Certains soins du contour des yeux contiennent du rétinol ou ses esters. En 2024, l'Union européenne a fixé à l'annexe III du règlement cosmétique des concentrations maximales pour les composés de vitamine A, avec des périodes de transition pour les produits déjà sur le marché, et une mention correspondante sur l'emballage. Les soins à effet lumière peuvent contenir MICA ou TITANIUM DIOXIDE, qui éclaircissent optiquement l'aspect de la peau.
Pour comparer un contour des yeux à une crème visage classique, il est instructif de placer les deux listes INCI côte à côte : elles se recoupent souvent largement. Les différences tiennent d'ordinaire au parfum, à la texture, à la concentration de certains actifs et au conditionnement, comme un embout métallique ou une pompe.
