Over Listerine
Listerine werd in 1879 bedacht door Joseph Lawrence, een arts uit St. Louis, en vernoemd naar de Britse chirurg Sir Joseph Lister. Tegenwoordig is het merk eigendom van Kenvue. De klassieke mondwaterformules zijn opgebouwd rond vier componenten uit etherische oliën: eucalyptol, menthol, methylsalicylaat en thymol.
Componenten uit etherische oliën op het etiket
De 29 Listerine-producten in INCIMondo zijn mondwaters. Drie van de vier componenten uit etherische oliën waarop de klassieke formules zijn gebouwd – MENTHOL, THYMOL en EUCALYPTOL – behoren tot de vijf meest voorkomende ingrediënten na water, samen met SORBITOL en POLOXAMER 407, een oppervlakteactieve stof die helpt de oliën in de spoeling op te lossen.
De gebruikelijke cosmetische aandachtspunten zijn hier allemaal negatief: geuringrediënten, parabenen, siliconen en gedenatureerde alcohol (ALCOHOL DENAT.) ontbreken in alle 29 formules.
Een mondwateretiket lezen
In mondverzorging wordt smaak vermeld als AROMA in plaats van PARFUM, terwijl componenten zoals MENTHOL of THYMOL onder hun eigen naam staan. Listerine gaat terug tot 1879, maar formules evolueren, dus de fles in je hand is de referentie.
