About elmex
elmex is a toothpaste brand launched in 1962 by GABA International, a company based in Therwil, Switzerland. It was the first toothpaste to use the amine fluoride olaflur. Colgate-Palmolive acquired GABA in 2004 for about 841 million US dollars, and elmex has been part of its oral care portfolio since then. Products in our database include anti-caries, sensitive, enamel repair and gentle whitening toothpastes, many with French, German, Dutch or Italian labels.
Toothpaste, ingredient by ingredient
All 14 elmex products we list are toothpastes – anti-caries, sensitive, enamel and gentle whitening versions. Their flavour is declared as AROMA (13), followed by SORBITOL (12), LIMONENE (9) and the abrasive HYDRATED SILICA (9).
None of the 14 lists fragrance (PARFUM), since oral care uses AROMA instead. Parabens, silicones and denatured alcohol (ALCOHOL DENAT.) are absent throughout.
Fluoride and flavour
Look for the fluoride source on the list: elmex was the first toothpaste with the amine fluoride OLAFLUR, and others may use SODIUM FLUORIDE, SODIUM MONOFLUOROPHOSPHATE or STANNOUS FLUORIDE; the fluoride content is often given in ppm. LIMONENE in nine of the pastes shows that the flavouring can include named fragrance substances even without PARFUM.
