About Gillette
Gillette was founded in 1901 by King C. Gillette as the American Safety Razor Company and renamed the Gillette Safety Razor Company in 1904. Headquartered in Boston, it became part of Procter & Gamble after a takeover announced in January 2005. The brand's core products are safety razors and replacement blades, together with shave gels and foams; its women's razor line Venus was created in 2000. Ingredient lists in our database relate to shaving products and to the lubricating strips of razors.
Razors as well as gels
The 20 Gillette entries we list fall into two categories: razors with refill blades, and shaving products such as gels and foams. For the razors, the ingredients describe the lubricating strip, which explains a ranking led by the antioxidant BHT (11) and SILICA (10), followed by PARFUM (9) and PALMITIC ACID (9).
Fragrance appears in 11 formulas (55%). Silicones are listed in 3 (15%), denatured alcohol (ALCOHOL DENAT.) in 2 (10%) and parabens in 1 (5%).
Strip or shave gel?
Before comparing, check what the list refers to: for a razor or cartridge it covers only the lubricating strip, not something you spread on the skin in quantity. Shave gels and foams – and Venus products for women – should be compared with other gels and foams.
