About Herbal Essences

Herbal Essences is a hair care brand introduced in 1971 by Clairol, initially as a single shampoo. Procter & Gamble bought the brand from Clairol in 2001 and has expanded it into numerous collections, each designed for a different hair need. The products in our database are mainly shampoos and conditioners, including variants such as Coconut Milk and a colour-care booster.

Herbal Essences, formula by formula

Shampoos, conditioners and other hair care make up the 37 Herbal Essences products we list. Like its P&G sibling Pantene, the range shares a recognisable backbone: CITRIC ACID (35), SODIUM BENZOATE (27), HISTIDINE (25) and METHYLCHLOROISOTHIAZOLINONE (24) are the most frequent ingredients.

Every one of the 37 declares fragrance (100%). Silicones appear in 20 (54%) and denatured alcohol (ALCOHOL DENAT.) in 12 (32%); none contains parabens.

Collections and silicones

Each collection is designed for a different hair need, so silicones are present in some products and absent in others. They usually end in -CONE or -SILOXANE (DIMETHICONE, AMODIMETHICONE, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE) – check the particular bottle, since a Coconut Milk shampoo and a colour booster may differ.
