Foot care covers a range of formats used on the soles, heels and toes. Creams and balms are massaged in, often in the evening; scrubs and soaks are used in a footbath and rinsed off; foot sprays and powders are applied to the feet or into shoes; and exfoliating socks are worn for a set time following the instructions on the pack.
Creams for the feet frequently feature UREA, sometimes high in the list, together with GLYCERIN, LANOLIN or PARAFFINUM LIQUIDUM. Exfoliating products use acids such as SALICYLIC ACID, LACTIC ACID or GLYCOLIC ACID, or particles like PUMICE. Refreshing formulas add MENTHOL, CAMPHOR or MENTHA PIPERITA OIL, and foot deodorants contain ALCOHOL DENAT., ZINC RICINOLEATE or aluminium salts.
SALICYLIC ACID is listed both in Annex III and in Annex V of the EU Cosmetics Regulation, with restrictions including use in products for children under three. Acid-based exfoliating socks include directions for use and warnings that should be read carefully. Products in pressurised cans list propellants first and carry aerosol warnings, and powders often begin with TALC or ZEA MAYS STARCH.
