Aftershaves – lotions and balms: INCI ingredient analysis

Aftershaves are leave-on products used on freshly shaved skin. Classic splashes and lotions are thin, alcohol-based liquids with a pronounced scent, whereas balms and gels are creamier or water-based and often less fragranced. Some are sold as part of a fragrance line and share its scent profile. Balms are often chosen for a softer feel, while splashes give a brief, cooling tingle as the alcohol evaporates.

Alcohol-based splashes usually start with ALCOHOL DENAT. and AQUA, followed by PARFUM, GLYCERIN and sometimes MENTHOL for a cooling feel. Balms are emulsions combining oils, emollients such as CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, fatty alcohols and emulsifiers, plus ingredients like ALLANTOIN, PANTHENOL, BISABOLOL or HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA WATER. Gels are typically thickened with CARBOMER or a gum.

Since aftershaves stay on the skin, named fragrance allergens such as LIMONENE, LINALOOL or CITRAL must appear on the label above 0.001%. Products scented with a full fragrance composition can therefore have long allergen lists at the end. Alcohol content is not stated as a percentage, but its position near the top of the INCI list shows it is a main component.
