INCI name

2,3-BUTANEDIOL

2,3-Butanediol

A small diol used as a humectant, solvent and fragrance ingredient.

What it is

2,3-Butanediol is a four-carbon diol (2,3-butylene glycol), an isomer of the more common 1,3-butanediol (butylene glycol). CosIng lists it as a humectant, fragrance, skin-conditioning and solvent ingredient.

Where it is used

Found in toners, serums, creams and other water-based products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Several CAS numbers cover its different stereoisomers; the INCI name does not reveal which form is used or whether it was made by fermentation or chemical synthesis.

Functions

Fragrance
Imparting an odour or taste. Creating a perceivable pleasant smell and/or masking a bad smell.
