A camphor-derived UV filter, linked in EU data to an Annex II entry.
What it is
4-Methylbenzylidene camphor, often abbreviated 4-MBC, is 1,7,7-trimethyl-3-[(4-methylphenyl)methylene]bicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one, an aromatic camphor derivative that absorbs UVB radiation. CosIng lists it as a light stabiliser, UV absorber and UV filter. The EU data link this ingredient to an entry in Annex II (prohibited substances).
Where it is used
Appears on the ingredient lists of a small number of products; it has been used in sun care and other products with UV protection.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
See the EU regulation section for what the Annex II entry covers and how it applies.
