INCI name

ALCOHOL DENAT.

Denatured alcohol

Ethanol made undrinkable with denaturing agents.

What it is

Alcohol denat. is ethanol to which a denaturant (for example denatonium benzoate) has been added so it cannot be sold as a drink. It is a solvent, evaporates quickly and gives a fresh, fast-drying feel.

Where it is used

Found in toners, sprays, deodorants, perfumes, sunscreens and hair styling products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Its drying effect depends on the concentration and the rest of the formula, which the INCI list does not show; it is unrelated to fatty alcohols such as cetyl alcohol.
