INCI name

AMMONIUM ACRYLATES COPOLYMER

Ammonium acrylates copolymer

A synthetic acrylic copolymer used as a film former, binder and thickener.

What it is

Ammonium acrylates copolymer is the ammonium salt of a copolymer of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or one or more of their simple esters. CosIng lists it as an antistatic, binding, film-forming and viscosity-controlling ingredient.

Where it is used

Found in mascaras, eyeliners, hair styling products, nail products and other film-forming products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not reveal the ratio of monomers or the molecular weight of the polymer.

Functions

Antistatic
Preventing and/or reducing static electricity by neutralising electrical charge on surfaces.
Binding
Providing adhesive properties during and after compression in cosmetic tablets and/or cakes.
Film forming
Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
