INCI name

AMMONIUM POLYACRYLOYLDIMETHYL TAURATE

Ammonium polyacryloyldimethyl taurate

A synthetic polymer used to thicken and stabilise.

What it is

Ammonium polyacryloyldimethyl taurate is the ammonium salt of a homopolymer of acryloyldimethyltaurine (a sulfonic acid monomer). CosIng lists it as emulsion stabilising and viscosity controlling.

Where it is used

Found in creams, gel-creams, serums, lotions and sun care.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not reveal the polymer grade, which affects texture.

Functions

Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
