Water, the most common solvent in cosmetic formulas.
What it is
Aqua is the INCI name for water. It dissolves water-soluble ingredients and forms the continuous phase of creams, lotions, gels and cleansers.
Where it is used
Found in most emulsions, toners, serums and rinse-off products, usually at the top of the ingredient list.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
Water is not a moisturising active by itself; how a product feels and performs depends on the whole formula.
Functions
- Solvent
- Dissolving other components of cosmetics. Solvents are usually liquids (aqueous and nonaqueous).
