An amino acid used as a pH adjuster and conditioning agent.

What it is

Arginine is a naturally occurring amino acid. It is mildly alkaline, so it is often used to neutralise acidic thickeners such as carbomer; it also acts as a skin- and hair-conditioning agent.

Where it is used

Found in gels, creams, serums, hair products and some toothpastes.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Its role depends on the formula; near the end of the list it is usually a pH adjuster.
