INCI name

AZELAIC ACID

Azelaic acid

A dicarboxylic acid used in cosmetics and, at higher strengths, in medicines.

What it is

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid. Cosmetic products use it at lower levels; higher-strength products for skin conditions are regulated as medicines in many countries.

Where it is used

Found in serums and creams marketed for uneven tone or blemish-prone skin.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

A cosmetic containing azelaic acid is not equivalent to a prescription product; concentration is not shown on the label.

Functions

Buffering
Stabilising the pH of an aqueous medium in a narrow range even if an acid or base is added. Altering and/or maintaining a cosmetic product's pH at the desired level.
Fragrance
