INCI name

BENTONITE

Bentonite clay

A colloidal clay that absorbs and thickens.

What it is

Bentonite is a colloidal clay consisting mainly of montmorillonite. CosIng lists it as absorbent, bulking, emulsion stabilising and viscosity controlling. In the EU it is also listed in Annex IV (allowed colorants).

Where it is used

Found in clay masks, cleansers, dry shampoos, deodorants, powders and some creams, where it absorbs oil and thickens the formula.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

See the EU regulation section for the applicable limits. Clays from different deposits can differ in composition; the INCI name does not show the source.

Functions

Absorbent
Taking up water- and/or oil-soluble (dissolved or finely dispersed) substances.
Bulking
Non-reactive (chemically inert), solid ingredients that dilute other solids and/or increase the volume of cosmetic products.
Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
