What it is

Benzophenone-3, also known as oxybenzone, is a benzophenone derivative (2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone). CosIng lists it as a light stabiliser, UV absorber and UV filter. In the EU it is listed in Annex VI (UV filters), with limits that differ by product type.

Where it is used

Found in some sunscreens, face and lip products with SPF, and in small amounts in other products to protect the formula from light.

Limits of interpretation

Exclusively or mainly intended to protect the skin and/or hair against certain UV radiation by absorbing, reflecting or scattering UV radiation. All authorised UV filters are substances in the positive list of Annex VI to the Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009.
