INCI name

BENZYL BENZOATE

Benzyl benzoate

A fragrance ingredient and solvent, labelled as an allergen above set thresholds.

What it is

Benzyl benzoate is an ester found naturally in balsams such as Peru and tolu. In cosmetics it is used as a fragrance ingredient and solvent, and it is one of the fragrance allergens that must be named in the EU above 0.001% (leave-on) or 0.01% (rinse-off).

Where it is used

Found in perfumes and perfumed products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Its presence on the label means it exceeds the labelling threshold; it does not mean the product will cause a reaction.

Functions

Antimicrobial
Preventing and/or slowing down microbial growth.
Solvent
