INCI name

BETA-CAROTENE

Beta-carotene

An orange carotenoid pigment used for skin conditioning and colour.

What it is

Beta-carotene is a carotenoid, the orange pigment found in carrots and many other plants. It can be obtained from plants, algae, fermentation or synthesis; the INCI name does not say which. CosIng lists it as skin conditioning, and in the EU it is also listed in Annex IV (allowed colorants).

Where it is used

Found in creams, body lotions, sun and self-tan-themed products, lip products and soaps, where it can also tint the formula yellow to orange.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

See the EU regulation section for the applicable limits and purity criteria. The label does not show the concentration actually used.
