INCI name

BHA

Butylated hydroxyanisole

A synthetic antioxidant that protects oils from going rancid.

What it is

BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) is a mixture of tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol isomers. It slows the oxidation of oils and fats in a formula. CosIng lists it as an antioxidant and fragrance ingredient.

Where it is used

Found in lipsticks, creams, makeup and other products rich in oils.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

In INCI, BHA means butylated hydroxyanisole, not beta hydroxy acid (such as salicylic acid).

Functions

Antioxidant
Inhibiting reactions promoted by oxygen, thus avoiding oxidation and rancidity.
Fragrance
Imparting an odour or taste. Creating a perceivable pleasant smell and/or masking a bad smell.
