BIS-PEG/PPG-16/16 PEG/PPG-16/16 DIMETHICONE

Bis-PEG/PPG-16/16 PEG/PPG-16/16 dimethicone

A polyether-modified silicone used as an emulsifier and emollient.

What it is

Bis-PEG/PPG-16/16 PEG/PPG-16/16 dimethicone is a dimethicone derivative carrying alkoxylated side chains and end groups, each with an average of 16 ethylene oxide and 16 propylene oxide units. CosIng lists it as an emollient, skin-conditioning ingredient and emulsifying and cleansing surfactant.

Where it is used

Found in creams, foundations, sunscreens and other emulsions, particularly those with a silicone base.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The numbers in the name are averages, so the raw material is a mixture of molecules of different sizes.

Functions

Skin conditioning – emollient
Acting as lubricants on the skin surface providing the skin with a soft and smooth appearance.
Surfactant – emulsifying
Helping suspensions or dispersions of liquids in a second liquid by reducing the surface tension of the substances to be emulsified.
Skin conditioning
Maintaining the skin in good condition.
Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
