INCI name

BUTYL METHOXYDIBENZOYLMETHANE

Avobenzone

A UVA filter permitted in the EU.

What it is

Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (avobenzone) is an organic UV filter that absorbs mainly UVA radiation. It is listed in EU Annex VI with a maximum concentration of 5%. On its own it can degrade in sunlight, so formulas often combine it with stabilising filters such as octocrylene or bemotrizinol.

Where it is used

Found in sunscreens, day creams with SPF and tinted products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The presence of a UV filter does not show the SPF or UVA protection level; those come from testing the finished product.
