INCI name

BUTYLPHENYL METHYLPROPIONAL

Lilial

A fragrance ingredient now prohibited in EU cosmetics.

What it is

Butylphenyl methylpropional, known as lilial, is a synthetic lily-of-the-valley scent. Because it was classified as toxic to reproduction, it has been listed in EU Annex II (prohibited substances) and may not be placed on the EU market in cosmetics since March 2022.

Where it is used

Formerly common in perfumes, shampoos, shower gels and deodorants; it may still appear in older product data or non-EU products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

If you see it on a product sold in the EU, the data may describe an older formula; check the current label.
