INCI name

C13-14 ISOALKANE

C13-14 isoalkane

A mixture of branched hydrocarbons used as a solvent and emollient.

What it is

C13-14 isoalkane (formerly C13-14 isoparaffin) is a mixture of branched aliphatic hydrocarbons with 13 or 14 carbon atoms. CosIng lists it as solvent and skin conditioning.

Where it is used

Found in creams, serums, lotions and make-up, often as part of ready-made thickener blends.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

It frequently enters a formula as part of a supplier blend, so its own share cannot be read from the label.

Functions

Solvent
Dissolving other components of cosmetics. Solvents are usually liquids (aqueous and nonaqueous).
Skin conditioning – miscellaneous
Enhancing the appearance of dry and/or damaged skin by reducing flaking and restoring suppleness.
