C18-36 ACID GLYCOL ESTER

C18-36 acid glycol ester

An ester of ethylene glycol and long-chain fatty acids, used as an emollient and emulsifier.

What it is

C18-36 acid glycol ester is the ester of ethylene glycol with a mixture of long-chain fatty acids having 18 to 36 carbon atoms, a waxy material. CosIng lists it as an emollient, skin-conditioning ingredient and emulsifying and cleansing surfactant.

Where it is used

Found in lipsticks, lip balms, creams, mascaras and other products with a waxy texture.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

C18-36 describes a range of chain lengths, so the raw material is a mixture rather than a single compound.

Functions

Skin conditioning – emollient
Acting as lubricants on the skin surface providing the skin with a soft and smooth appearance.
Surfactant – emulsifying
Helping suspensions or dispersions of liquids in a second liquid by reducing the surface tension of the substances to be emulsified.
Skin conditioning
Maintaining the skin in good condition.
Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
