A calcium salt of phosphoric acid, used mainly as an abrasive and oral care ingredient.
What it is
Calcium phosphate is a calcium salt of phosphoric acid; the chemical name given is calcium bis(dihydrogen orthophosphate), and the INCI name is linked to more than one CAS number. CosIng lists it as an abrasive, antiplaque, buffering, bulking, oral care and viscosity-controlling ingredient.
Where it is used
Appears on the ingredient lists of a small number of products, such as toothpastes.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
The INCI name does not show exactly which calcium phosphate is present.
Functions
- Abrasive
- Removing unwanted tissue or foreign materials from various body surfaces, including mechanical tooth cleaning and/or gloss improvement.
- Antiplaque
- Helping protect against plaque.
- Buffering
- Stabilising the pH of an aqueous medium in a narrow range even if an acid or base is added. Altering and/or maintaining a cosmetic product's pH at the desired level.
- Bulking
- Non-reactive (chemically inert), solid ingredients that dilute other solids and/or increase the volume of cosmetic products.
- Oral care
- Providing cosmetic effects to the oral cavity, e.g. cleansing, deodorising, protecting.
- Viscosity controlling
- Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
EU regulation
This ingredient is not listed in the annexes of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 in the CosIng data.
