INCI name

CAPRYLOYL/CAPROYL METHYL GLUCAMIDE

Capryloyl/caproyl methyl glucamide

A sugar-based non-ionic surfactant used for cleansing, foaming and emulsifying.

What it is

Capryloyl/caproyl methyl glucamide is a non-ionic surfactant obtained by reacting methylglucamine, a glucose-derived amino sugar alcohol, with a mixture of short-chain fatty acid chlorides; CosIng describes the acyl groups as C8-10. CosIng lists it as an emulsifying, foam-boosting and cleansing surfactant and a skin-conditioning ingredient.

Where it is used

Found in a small number of rinse-off products, such as shampoos and shower gels.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not show the exact ratio of the fatty acid chains.

Functions

Surfactant – emulsifying
Helping suspensions or dispersions of liquids in a second liquid by reducing the surface tension of the substances to be emulsified.
Surfactant – foam boosting
Increasing foaming capacity and/or stabilize foams in general.
Skin conditioning
Maintaining the skin in good condition.
Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
