INCI name

CETRIMONIUM CHLORIDE

Cetrimonium chloride

A cationic surfactant used for conditioning hair.

What it is

Cetrimonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound with a positive charge that binds to hair, reducing static and making detangling easier. It also has antimicrobial properties and is regulated in the EU, with concentration limits depending on use.

Where it is used

Common in conditioners, hair masks, detangling sprays and some shampoos.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

See the EU regulation section for its limits; the label does not show the concentration.
