INCI name

CETYL ESTERS

Cetyl esters (synthetic spermaceti)

A synthetic wax that imitates spermaceti.

What it is

Cetyl esters is a reaction product of blended fatty acids and fatty alcohols designed to resemble natural spermaceti. It consists mainly of myristyl, cetyl and palmityl esters of myristic and palmitic acids. CosIng lists it as an emollient and skin-conditioning agent.

Where it is used

Used in creams, lotions, lip balms, stick products and makeup.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Despite the reference to spermaceti, it is a synthetic substitute; the INCI name does not reveal the source of the fatty acids.
