INCI name

COLLAGEN

Collagen

A fibrous structural protein.

What it is

Collagen is a fibrous protein made of three peptide chains and rich in the amino acids proline and hydroxyproline; in mammals it makes up about a third of total protein. CosIng lists it as hair conditioning, moisturising and skin conditioning.

Where it is used

Found in face creams, serums, masks and hair care.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not reveal the source of the collagen, and collagen applied in a cosmetic is not the same as the skin's own collagen.
