Ring-shaped synthetic molecules built from glycoluril units, used as absorbent and film-forming ingredients.
What it is
Cucurbiturils are, according to CosIng, cyclic molecules consisting of five to eight glycoluril units linked by methylene bridges. Their ring shape creates a cavity that can hold other molecules. CosIng lists them as an absorbent, chelating, emulsion-stabilising and film-forming ingredient.
Where it is used
Found in a small number of products.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
The INCI name does not show which ring sizes are present, which is why several CAS numbers are listed.
Functions
- Absorbent
- Taking up water- and/or oil-soluble (dissolved or finely dispersed) substances.
- Chelating
- Forming complexes with metal ions which could affect the stability and/or appearance of cosmetics.
- Emulsion stabilising
- Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
- Film forming
- Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
EU regulation
This ingredient is not listed in the annexes of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 in the CosIng data.
