INCI name

DILINOLEIC ACID

Dilinoleic acid (dimer acid)

A C36 dicarboxylic acid made by dimerising linoleic acid, used as an emollient.

What it is

Dilinoleic acid is the dimer of linoleic acid, a C36 dicarboxylic acid formed by joining two molecules of this unsaturated C18 fatty acid; it is also known as dimer acid. CosIng lists it as an emollient and skin-conditioning ingredient.

Where it is used

Appears on the ingredient lists of a small number of products, such as lip products and creams.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Commercial dimer acids are mixtures of structural isomers, which is why more than one CAS number is listed.
