INCI name

DIMETHYL ETHER

Dimethyl ether

A liquefied gas used as an aerosol propellant.

What it is

Dimethyl ether is the simplest ether, a gas at room temperature that is stored as a liquid under pressure. CosIng lists it as a propellant, solvent and viscosity controlling agent.

Where it is used

Found in hair sprays, deodorant and antiperspirant sprays, foams and other aerosols.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

In aerosols it largely evaporates on spraying, so its position on the list does not reflect how much remains on skin or hair.

Functions

Propellant
Generating pressure in an aerosol pack, expelling contents when the valve is opened. Some liquefied propellants can act as solvents.
Solvent
Dissolving other components of cosmetics. Solvents are usually liquids (aqueous and nonaqueous).
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
