INCI name

DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE

Dipotassium phosphate

An inorganic phosphate salt used as a buffering agent.

What it is

Dipotassium phosphate (dipotassium hydrogenorthophosphate) is a potassium salt of phosphoric acid. CosIng lists it as anticorrosive and buffering.

Where it is used

Used in creams, serums, cleansers, toothpastes and other products where pH needs to be kept stable.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

It is often used together with other phosphate salts; the label does not show the resulting pH.

Functions

Anticorrosive
Preventing and or inhibiting the corrosion of the packaging material.
Buffering
Stabilising the pH of an aqueous medium in a narrow range even if an acid or base is added. Altering and/or maintaining a cosmetic product's pH at the desired level.
