A UVB filter permitted in the EU.
What it is
Ethylhexyl salicylate (octisalate) is an organic UV filter that absorbs UVB radiation. It is listed in EU Annex VI with a maximum concentration of 5% and is usually combined with other filters to broaden protection and help dissolve them.
Where it is used
Found in sunscreens and day creams or make-up with SPF.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
The presence of a UV filter does not show the SPF; protection depends on the whole formula and testing.
