INCI name

EUGENOL

Eugenol

A clove-scented fragrance substance labelled as an allergen above set thresholds.

What it is

Eugenol is an aromatic compound found in clove oil, cinnamon leaf, bay and other plants. It is one of the fragrance allergens that EU rules require to be named on the label above 0.001% in leave-on and 0.01% in rinse-off products.

Where it is used

Found in perfumed products, products with essential oils and some toothpastes.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Its presence on the label means it exceeds the labelling threshold; it does not mean the product will cause a reaction.

Functions

Denaturant
