The simplest amino acid, used for skin conditioning and buffering.

What it is

Glycine is the smallest amino acid and occurs naturally in the body, including in collagen. In cosmetics it acts as a skin-conditioning agent and helps buffer pH.

Where it is used

Found in moisturisers, serums, hair products and cleansers.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The presence of an amino acid does not mean that it replaces or builds collagen in the skin.

Functions

Antistatic
Preventing and/or reducing static electricity by neutralising electrical charge on surfaces.
Buffering
Stabilising the pH of an aqueous medium in a narrow range even if an acid or base is added. Altering and/or maintaining a cosmetic product's pH at the desired level.
Hair conditioning
Enhancing the appearance and feel of hair. Leaving the hair easy to comb, supple, soft and shiny and/or imparting volume, lightness, gloss, texture, etc.
Skin conditioning
Maintaining the skin in good condition.
