INCI name

GLYCOL

Ethylene glycol

The simplest diol, used as a humectant, solvent and viscosity controller.

What it is

Glycol is the INCI name for ethylene glycol (ethane-1,2-diol), the simplest diol. CosIng lists it as a humectant, solvent and viscosity-controlling agent.

Where it is used

Found in a limited range of products, such as some hair and skin care products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

It is not the same as propylene glycol, butylene glycol or other glycols, which have their own INCI names.

Functions

Humectant
Retaining and/or preserving the moisture in a product during use.
Solvent
Dissolving other components of cosmetics. Solvents are usually liquids (aqueous and nonaqueous).
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
