The smallest alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), used in exfoliating products.
What it is
Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid with a small molecule. In acidic formulas it loosens the bonds between dead skin cells at the surface.
Where it is used
Found in exfoliating toners, serums, peels and some cleansers; also used as a pH adjuster.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
Exfoliating strength depends on concentration and pH, which are not on the label. AHAs can increase sensitivity to the sun, so sun protection is usually advised.
Functions
- Buffering
- Stabilising the pH of an aqueous medium in a narrow range even if an acid or base is added. Altering and/or maintaining a cosmetic product's pH at the desired level.
