INCI name

HYDROCHLORIC ACID

Hydrochloric acid

Bufferingreviewed

A strong mineral acid used in small amounts to adjust pH.

What it is

Hydrochloric acid is an aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride. CosIng lists it as buffering.

Where it is used

Used in small amounts in shampoos, cleansers, creams and other formulas to lower the pH.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

In a finished product it is neutralised by other ingredients; its presence on the list does not mean the product is strongly acidic.

Functions

Buffering
Stabilising the pH of an aqueous medium in a narrow range even if an acid or base is added. Altering and/or maintaining a cosmetic product's pH at the desired level.
