INCI name

HYDROFLUOROCARBON 152A

HFC-152a (1,1-difluoroethane)

Propellantreviewed

A fluorinated hydrocarbon gas used as a propellant.

What it is

Hydrofluorocarbon 152a is 1,1-difluoroethane, a low-molecular-weight fluorinated hydrocarbon that is a gas at room temperature. CosIng lists it as a propellant.

Where it is used

Found in aerosol sprays such as hair sprays, deodorants and other pressurised products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

As a propellant it is used to dispense the product and largely escapes from it; its position on the list does not reflect how much remains on skin or hair.

Functions

Propellant
Generating pressure in an aerosol pack, expelling contents when the valve is opened. Some liquefied propellants can act as solvents.
