INCI name

HYDROGENATED POLY(C6-14 OLEFIN)

Hydrogenated poly(C6-14 olefin)

A synthetic hydrocarbon polymer used as an emollient and viscosity-controlling ingredient.

What it is

Hydrogenated poly(C6-14 olefin) is a synthetic hydrocarbon obtained by polymerising olefins with 6 to 14 carbon atoms and then hydrogenating the product. CosIng lists it as an emollient, skin-conditioning and viscosity-controlling agent.

Where it is used

Used in creams, lotions, makeup, lip products and cleansing oils.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not show the molecular weight, which determines whether the material is a light or a thick oil.

Functions

Skin conditioning – emollient
Acting as lubricants on the skin surface providing the skin with a soft and smooth appearance.
Skin conditioning
Maintaining the skin in good condition.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
