INCI name

HYDROLYZED COLLAGEN

Hydrolysed collagen

Collagen broken down into peptides and amino acids.

What it is

Hydrolyzed Collagen is obtained by acidic, alkaline or enzymatic hydrolysis of collagen; the CosIng description refers to animal material (hoofs and horns). It consists mainly of amino acids, peptides and proteins. CosIng lists many functions, including humectant, film forming, antistatic, and hair and skin conditioning.

Where it is used

Found in shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, creams, serums and body lotions.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The label does not state the exact animal or other source used. Collagen applied in a cosmetic is not the same as the collagen in the skin.
