INCI name

HYDROXYPROPYLCELLULOSE

Hydroxypropylcellulose

A cellulose derivative used as a thickener and film former.

What it is

Hydroxypropylcellulose is a cellulose ether in which some hydroxyl groups carry hydroxypropyl groups. CosIng lists it as a binding agent, emulsifying surfactant, emulsion stabiliser, film former and viscosity-controlling agent.

Where it is used

Found in gels, hair styling products, serums, makeup and toothpastes.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Its role in a given formula (thickener, film former or binder) is not shown on the label.

Functions

Binding
Providing adhesive properties during and after compression in cosmetic tablets and/or cakes.
Surfactant – emulsifying
Helping suspensions or dispersions of liquids in a second liquid by reducing the surface tension of the substances to be emulsified.
Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Film forming
Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
