INCI name

ISOPENTANE

Isopentane

A volatile hydrocarbon used as a propellant and solvent.

What it is

Isopentane (2-methylbutane) is a highly volatile, flammable hydrocarbon with five carbon atoms. CosIng lists it as propellant, solvent and viscosity controlling.

Where it is used

Found mainly in self-foaming (post-foaming) shaving gels, aerosol foams and some sprays.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

It is highly flammable; its role is technical and the label does not show how much is used.

Functions

Propellant
Generating pressure in an aerosol pack, expelling contents when the valve is opened. Some liquefied propellants can act as solvents.
Solvent
Dissolving other components of cosmetics. Solvents are usually liquids (aqueous and nonaqueous).
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
