Keratin

A fibrous structural protein used for hair and skin conditioning.

What it is

Keratin is a group of fibrous proteins that occur in vertebrates, for example in hair, wool, feathers, horns and nails. According to CosIng, keratins contain all the common amino acids and are characterised by a high cystine content. CosIng lists keratin as a hair-conditioning and skin-conditioning ingredient.

Where it is used

Found in shampoos, conditioners, hair masks and nail care products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not reveal the animal source of the keratin. Hydrolysed keratin has a separate INCI name.
