An alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) used for exfoliation or to adjust pH.
What it is
Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid. At low levels it simply adjusts the acidity of a formula; at higher levels and low pH it loosens the bonds between dead skin cells.
Where it is used
Found in exfoliating toners, peels and body lotions, and as a pH adjuster in many other products.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
Whether lactic acid acts as an exfoliant depends on its concentration and the product's pH, which the INCI list does not show. Products with AHAs can increase sensitivity to the sun.
