INCI name

LACTOBIONIC ACID

Lactobionic acid

Bufferingreviewed

A sugar-derived acid that CosIng lists as a buffering agent.

What it is

Lactobionic acid is made of galactose linked to gluconic acid; it belongs to the polyhydroxy acids. CosIng lists it only as a buffering agent.

Where it is used

Appears in facial care such as serums, toners, peels and creams, often in formulas built around hydroxy acids.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

What it does in a product depends on its concentration and the pH, neither of which the label shows.

Functions

Buffering
Stabilising the pH of an aqueous medium in a narrow range even if an acid or base is added. Altering and/or maintaining a cosmetic product's pH at the desired level.
