A polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid with emollient and conditioning functions.

What it is

Linolenic acid (alpha-linolenic acid) is an 18-carbon fatty acid with three double bonds, belonging to the omega-3 group. It occurs in many plant oils, such as linseed oil. CosIng lists it as an antistatic, cleansing, emollient, hair-conditioning, skin-conditioning, surfactant and perfuming ingredient.

Where it is used

Found in creams, serums, facial oils, lotions and hair care products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not reveal whether the fatty acid was obtained from a plant oil or by another route.
