INCI name

MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE

Magnesium chloride

A mineral salt used to stabilise formulas and adjust viscosity.

What it is

Magnesium chloride is an inorganic salt. In cosmetics it adjusts viscosity, helps stabilise water-in-oil emulsions and is one of the stabilisers supplied with the preservative blend methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone.

Where it is used

Found in shampoos, shower gels, creams and bath products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

When it appears together with magnesium nitrate, it usually comes from the preservative blend.
